About 15 years ago, our 12 year old daughter wanted a dog. I guess one reason was because our family dog, Shasta, has recently passed away. But more than that, this daughter has always been an animal lover. All she wanted to do during her teenage years was to move to Africa and save the cheetahs. But that is another story. She wanted a dog really bad, in a "Where the Red Fern Grows" kind of way, without really caring what kind of a dog that was. She would put newspaper clippings for free dogs to a good home on our pillows at night. This went on for some time. So when Christmas was getting close we went out to Grantsville and found 'Bear'. This puppy got it's name because of the shape of her head - kind of like a bear. She was all black with a spot of white on her chest. She never did have a tail - I don't remember removing it - so the deed must have been done before we got her. We brought her home Christmas eve, and then tried to keep her quiet in a box in a closet for a surprise the next morning.

Bear grew up to be a very powerful dog. She never learned to walk calmly beside you. She was always pulling. The kids had her pull them on sleds in the winter and on roller-blades in summer. She like to herd, but the only thing she ever had to herd was small children. The more they ran from her, the more she liked it. She was not good at fetch, in fact she would retrieve ball or frisbee and just lay down on it. We tried to have her be an inside dog, but it never really worked very well. She was well house broken, but she was just too big. She liked to get up on the couch whenever she could. If we left her in the house, she would be up on the couch until we came through the front door. She had absolutely no poker face - "what? me? i wasn't on the couch". She once had a difference of opinion as to who should eat a chocolate - and one of our sons got a pierced ear over it.

When we moved to Virginia, she traveled the 2,000 miles in a crate in the back of the Suburban. We let her run free for a while at Adaom-ondi-ahmam, but she came back. I think my wife's idea of living in Virginia including having all of the animals run free. That works fine for cats, but dogs, rabbits and turtles - not so much. I don't know how many times we had to bail Bear out of jail after she was picked up by animal control usually after a thunderstorm. You will remember that she has a bear shaped head and so her neck was about the thickest part of her and it made it really easy for her to slip out of a collar. We did what we could to restrain her. I even put in a invisible fence - complete with a shock collar. That actually worked for a while, until she decided she would rather run and get shocked than stay in the yard. And this was not any small yard. We allowed her about 2 acres. After that, she spent most of her time on a zip line - a rope stretched between the house and some distant tree with a pulley attached to her leash and collar.

On a Thanksgiving Day, Hobbit showed up and stayed. The two of them were good friends for the last 7 or so years. Over the last couple of years, Bear started to show some grey around the muzzle and started to slow down some. She would still pull, but she got tired easier and towards the end her hind legs would shake. The day we had to take her to the vet, my wife brushed her for a long time. She seemed to appreciate that.

Rest in peace Old Bear. It's lonely without seeing you on the back deck every morning. I started working on it between Christmas and New Years with my very inadequate skills and my equally inadequate tools. I had a very simple design in mind, one that I thought I could handle. When I went looking for the right sized piece of wood for the top, I discovered Rick Miller of Logs To Lumber in Faber, VA. Rick has this amazing wood shop in this almost falling apart building in Faber (which consists of a Post Office and Rick's shop). Rick knows everything about everthing about wood and how to work it. Not only did Rick supply the piece of wood I was looking for, but transformed the project from a spartan thing I made in my garage, to a work of art. The top started out as a 1" thick oak plank that Rick pulled from a pile. He added so much detail to the stand, while keeping the original concept. So thanks for all your help Rick.

The long bolt sticking out of the side has been replace by a nice brass bolt of the correct length.

The top sitting on the base at the shop. They said, we are bringing you our old van, because we can't take three cars with only two drivers. No you're not, we said. Yes we are they replied. So that is how we inherited a 1995 Ford Windstar minivan with a bazillion miles on it, and an interior that looked like the aftermath of 3 kids eating two bazillion happy meals in the back. The engine was so shot, the oil pressure light flickers when it idles. Teresa hit a dear with it and added character to the front end. I backed it into the Suburban one dark night heading out to a rescue squqad call. Now it officially had dents in all 4 sides. Last week, it wouldn't start, so I changed the battery, battery cable and the starter on a cold windy winter morning, way too close to the dog kennel. Did I mention that the dog's have been too close to a skunk? So after sinking a couple hundred into the battery and starter, the transmission started dropping down into 2nd gear - at any speed.

Whew - I didn't intend to write all that about the van. The reason for this post is to announce the purchase of a new truck - well not new, because I have never purchased any vehicle brand new. This is a 2002 Ford Ranger. I guess I have become a Ford Man - strange as that seems.

Aaron Hancockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11109126739763357088noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7916859597764067049.post-13542240976844180142010-01-23T10:09:00.000-08:002010-01-23T11:46:49.144-08:00Lily Practicing CPRWe have this little toy dinosaur that makes a noise when you squeeze it. Teresa was able to spend over 5 weeks with her parents before she had to return home to Virginia. These were loving times when she had the opportunity to give loving care to her mother who had loved her all of her life. The funeral is Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Glenwood LDS Chapel in Glenwood, Alberta, Canada.

Teresa's mother, Thelma Law, has cancer and is not doing very well. Teresa left for Alberta, Canada the first part of October to help take care of her. I spent 12 days up there, returning last Tuesday night. Teresa intends to stay in Canada for a few more weeks. Her mother is not expected to be with us much longer.

I didn't get along with my mother-in-law very well in the beginning. I think there seemed to be some competition between the two of us for Teresa's attention. Over the years though, I have really gained an appreciation for her. There were some very hard years in the Law family and through it all Gramma and Grampa, as I call them, have always been true. Their actions have shown that they are true disciples of Christ, they have been true to thier children and grandchildren and no one has been left behind. They served a mission in France. They served as temple workers in the Cardston Temple for many years. Gramma was the temple organist. They criss-crossed the country to visit thier children and grandchildren. They have been to visit us several times since we moved to Virginia. As recently as last summer, they drove to Washington state for a family reunion. Gramma got sick on the way home from that trip. She spent several days in the hospital and has never really recovered her strength.

Gramma and Grampa have been married almost 58 years. They had 7 children. Angela died as an infant. The other 6 have all spent time with her in the last couple of months. I know that is a great comfort to her and Grampa.

When I was in Canada, she and I had several good talks. She has a firm conviction that this life is not the end and that families are forever. I asked her to look after those of us who will stay behind, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchilren. We are going to need all the help we can get.

Aaron Hancockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11109126739763357088noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7916859597764067049.post-23526568175749723672009-10-31T15:34:00.001-07:002009-10-31T15:36:59.713-07:00Done with school...For the past 18 months, I have been 'attending' online classes with the University of Phoenix. In the first few hours, news was sketchy. Was it a terrorist attack or a terrible accident. Then news of the second plane hitting the second tower and a third hitting the Pentagon. Throughout the day, the reality of the events sunk in. At the time, we did not have broadcast or satellite TV in the house. It wasn't until that evening that we saw the video clips at a neighbors. When we saw the videos for the first time, it was all of it together. The first plane into the towers, the second plane, the plane into the Pentagon and finally the collapse of the towers. We simply sat there and cried. Who would of thought that we could be hit by an attack that would claim twice as many lives as Pearl Harbor. I hope that the memory of that day never fades for me and that we as a nation will remember those who lost and gave their lives that day.

And not only those who gave their lives that day, but in the two wars spawned by that attack. We were attacked, because radicals did not believe in allowing people to be free. Free to live their lives as they wanted to live. Two wars have now been fought to extend that type of freedom to people who have not lived with the sweet experience of being able to choose.Aaron Hancockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11109126739763357088noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7916859597764067049.post-70560475443948899692009-07-25T19:54:00.000-07:002009-08-22T15:05:19.986-07:00It's a mystery...just waiting to be solved.

Update - 8/22/09 - I spent the afternoon with some very nice people at the Fluvanna County Historical Society. As soon as I showed them this picture, the three of them got very excited. After talking about it, we suspect that it is from the Bargesburg villiage circa the 1820's. The road could be the old stage coach road that ran between Columbia and Charlottesville. The historical society was not aware of the chimney, which makes me feel better than if I had walked in and had them say "Oh yeah, we've known of that place for years." I know the name of the property owners now. The next steps are to get in touch with them to see if they know that the site is there, and to visit the county records office to trace ownership of the property back to the early 19th century.

We walk the dogs in the woods behind our house. We have known all along that there was an old roadbed back there. Today, we went around some downed tree and followed the road farther than we have before. Look at what we discovered. We have no idea how old it is. The road leads to our subdivision, so it obviously went through it before the houses were built. The chimney is directly up a hill from Broken Island on the Rivanna river.Aaron Hancockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11109126739763357088noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7916859597764067049.post-75637546840301254342009-07-20T19:47:00.000-07:002009-07-20T20:21:28.705-07:00Lily showing off her new skillsAaron Hancockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11109126739763357088noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7916859597764067049.post-64600533876017599682009-06-26T16:44:00.000-07:002009-06-26T16:47:27.289-07:00Camping TripAaron Hancockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11109126739763357088noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7916859597764067049.post-87504604088573628322009-05-05T19:26:00.000-07:002009-05-05T20:05:57.833-07:00Wii Little LilyWe broke down and bought a Wii a couple of weeks ago.
